MG v padesátých letech postavilo zajímavý vůz určený pro dosažení co nejvyšší rychlosti. I když měl pouze skromný čtyřválec, dokázal se rozjet na více než 400 km/h.

MG v dnešní podobě známe jako britskou značku vlastněnou čínským koncernem SAIC produkující levné crossovery, ale také cenově zajímavé elektromobily. Na rozdíl od zcela nových výrobců přicházejících z Číny se MG může opírat o bohatou historii, která nabízí mnoho zajímavých momentů. K autu pojmenovaném jako MG EX181 se váže jeden z nich.

Experimentální vozidlo vzniklo na konci padesátých let minulého století s cílem překonat rychlostní rekord mezi automobily s malým zdvihovým objemem. Technici MG využili čtyřválec o objemu 1,5 litru, který běžně nabízel necelých 70 koní. V rámci řady úprav ale motor dostal velký kompresor a navíc byl poháněn směsí metanolu, nitrobenzenu, acetonu a sirného éteru. Ve výsledku tak nakonec výkon vzrostl na 304 koní.

Neobvyklé MG se ale kromě relativně vysokého výkonu mohlo spolehnout také na vynikající aerodynamiku. Kapkovitá střela totiž měla karoserii se součinitelem odporu vzduchu pouze 0,12. Podle automobilky měl vůz tak malý aerodynamický odpor, že by mu k dosažení rychlosti 160 km/h stačilo pouze 29,4 koní.

V roce 1957 se speciální MG rozjelo na americké pláni v Bonneville a dosáhlo rychlosti 395,31 km/h. O dva roky později byl pokus opakován. Auto prošlo úpravami, kdy ze zadní části zmizela ploutev a výsledkem bylo maximum 410,23 km/h. V kontextu čtyřválcové patnáctistovky to je úctyhodný počin, který určitě stojí za připomenutí.

Uvidíme, zda se MG někdy k takovým rekordům vrátí třeba v kombinaci s elektrickým pohonem. Britská automobilka totiž podobných rychlostních speciálů postavila celou řadu.
